Picture it (ha! pun intended), you book a photo session, the date is set, you and your photographer have decided on the perfect location, now all that is left is to decide what you are going to wear. Seems daunting, doesn't it? Well, this post is here to take some of that stress away with six helpful tips for choosing amazing outfits for your session.
1. Coordinate, don't match
When choosing your outfits for your family or couples session, the idea is to coordinate and not match completely. Remember when everyone used to get photos done in matching jeans and white t-shirts? Well, we’re not doing that. Choose base color palette and work from there! Use the seasonal colors found where your session will be held to draw inspiration! Check the image below for my favorite seasonal color palettes for photo sessions!
2. Small patterns create interest
Not only are we creating interest in our photos by using coordination instead of matching, you can also keep things interesting with some small patterns. If choosing to go this route, I typically suggest having one person wear the pattern and using the colors in that piece as a base for choosing everyone else’s outfits. This ensures that everyone gets pulled together in what they’re wearing and you all look cohesive. All of that said, I only suggest patterns if it is something that is not too loud or distracting. Small flowers, polka dots, or things along those lines are great, but anything larger could end up taking away from the focus of the image—you!
3. Mix textures and add layers
Layering is a great way to add depth to your family photos. You can add also add depth by utilizing different fabrics. Many people believe that if one person is wearing jeans and a cotton shirt, that everyone has to wear these fabrics, but that is not the case at all! Adding in lace, knits, or other textured items can still creative a cohesive look and looks more natural than everyone being in the same thing.
If you want to add a pop of color, but prefer more neutral clothes, accessories can be a great way yo do this! Adding a brightly colored scarf can make a neutral outfit stand out amongst a natural backdrop. Statement necklaces, hats (not ball caps, friends), and other fun accessories are another great way to bring your personality into the session and can even be used as a prop in some cases.
5. Consider your home
This may sound silly at first, but hear me out. Think about the colors present in your home and where/how you will be displaying the images from your photo session. For example, if your living room has an empty wall perfect for displaying a framed print (or a few), consider what colors will flow with this space in your home. Do you have a brightly colored couch? If so, consider incorporating this into your outfits. Is there a seat with an awesome pattern? Then pull the colors from that pattern and add them to your clothing choices. And if your furniture and walls are more neutral, you can either stick with this theme, or go with brighter colors to create a pop focal point on your wall.
6. Finally, comfort is KEY!
Whatever you do in choosing your outfits, make sure that you choose something that you feel comfortable and confident in! When you feel great in your clothes, you will be able to relax more during your session, and your confidence will show through in your portraits. If you don’t typically wear a certain style and don’t feel confident in it—don’t start now! Wear what you know looks and feels great and you will, in turn, look and feel great in your photos!
